History

Andrews County was created in 1876 and named for Richard Andrews, who was killed at the Battle of Concepcion in 1835 and is often called the first man to fall in the Texas Revolution. Sparsely settled ranch country, it was not formally organized until May 1910, when the town of Andrews was chosen as county seat over rival Shafter Lake.
